Save Energy in 2026 With Underfloor Heating

Looking to improve your home and save energy in the new year? Underfloor heating, whether water-based or electric floor heating, could be the improvement that sees you saving both money and emissions. Here are the reasons why it is considered to be energy-saving heating:

More Efficient Than Conventional Heating

You can expect lower energy bills and energy usage on underfloor heating. How is this possible? The boiler flow temperature for wet underfloor heating and operational temperature for electric floor heating are much lower than with radiators, running at approximately 40-45°C. The heat is also distributed across the floor evenly. In simple terms, you get better heating for less, and can see reduced heating bills by up to 35%.

Isn’t Electric Floor Heating More Expensive to Run?

Due to electricity being priced higher than gas per kWh*, if you are changing from gas-powered heating to electric, you may have higher bills or only see a small improvement. It depends on how inefficient the previous gas-powered system was.

Is your property heated by electric radiators? Electric floor heating, like its water counterpart, typically uses less energy to heat a room to its desired temperature. With effective zoning and heating schedules, you will likely see lower bills with energy-saving heating.

Compatible With Renewables and Heat Pump Installations

Underfloor heating pairs well with low-carbon energy sources and renewable energy. Electric floor heating can source renewable energy directly from the mains, whilst wet underfloor heating does so when paired with a heat pump, which produces 3-4 times more heat for every kWh of energy used, compared to a condensing gas boiler.

Heat pump installations are becoming increasingly accessible in the UK. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is still ongoing and grants up to £7,500 towards the cost of a heat pump. There is also the Warm Homes: Local Grant available to certain postcodes to fund energy-efficiency improvements.

Additional Savings With Zoned Heating

We touched briefly on effective zoning and heating schedules, but what do these actually mean for underfloor heating’s advantage over conventional systems? With a typical central heating system, you rely on one thermostat to judge how the whole property is heated. With electric radiators, it can be worse, as you are relying on timed switches or a thermostat located directly next to the radiator.

To put it simply, energy can be wasted either by heating rooms that don’t need it or by overcorrecting to ensure rooms are heated to an ideal temperature. With underfloor heating, rooms are sorted into “zones” with their own individual programmable thermostats. This allows you finer control over which rooms get heated and when. You may find that your energy usage drops considerably when you fine-tune your zones and heating schedules.
