Retrofit Underfloor Heating for Listed Buildings and Upper Floors

The EasyJoist system can be used in a variety of installation scenarios, including older buildings and upper floors that aren’t solid concrete. It's a very lightweight, low-profile underfloor heating system, making it suitable for most joist types. The joist system has no thermal mass like a solid floor and relies on spreader plates to distribute the heat. This means they are very fast-acting and heat up very quickly, even from cold.

This type of low-profile underfloor heating for wooden flooring is suitable for barn conversions, Victorian/Edwardian style housing, and many Grade II listed buildings. It does not significantly raise floor levels, useful when the project has limited floor height requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Underfloor Insulation Required?

Insulation must be fitted between the joists, and tightly fitted to the clips and the top of the timbers. Air allowed to circulate around the pipes will both degrade the system performance and take longer for the room to heat up.

How Much Build-Up Height Is There?

The height is set by the top of the joists to which the pipes and spreader plates are fitted. The thickness of the pipe clip is 0.6mm, and the heat spreader plate is 0.5mm thick. This means that there is no significant rise in floor heights from that originally planned for when joists were specified.

Can Underfloor Heating Leak?

Water-based underfloor heating has a low risk of leakage, usually the result of poor installation or physical damage to the pipework post-installation. Most leaks occur at the joints between the manifold and the heat source.

At EasyFlow we use high-quality FRÄNKISCHE pipes, which are not at risk of corrosion and come with a 100-year warranty. We also provide our own 2-year workmanship guarantee to give you peace of mind that your underfloor heating for wooden flooring will be installed without faults.

What Floor Finishes Are Compatible?

Real wood, engineered wood, and low-Tog carpets are all compatible with underfloor heating for wooden flooring. Tile is also suitable, but should be laid appropriately for a suspended floor.

Is Underfloor Heating Suitable For Older Buildings?

Yes, we have retrofitted this system in many buildings built before the 1900s, including underfloor heating for listed buildings. In many cases, it is far more energy-efficient than retrofitted radiators. Please talk to us in a free consultation to see if your property could have it fitted.

Is This the Only Underfloor Heating System for Wooden Flooring?

We do have an alternative low-profile underfloor heating option called the EasyBacker, which builds the system above the suspended floor. It increases floor height by 20mm, but is suitable for all floor finishes.

How Is the EasyJoist Installed?

The first step is to fix the underfloor insulation between the joists, which is either mineral wool or rigid board, depending on the project requirements. If using a rigid board, a suitable batten needs to be fitted on the sides of the joist to support the insulation.

Once the underfloor insulation is installed, we fit the pipe clips and then the pipes. Additional insulation is fitted where required, before the heat spreader plates and vapour barrier are laid. Floorboards or engineered flooring can then be fixed to the joists to complete the installation.
