Shropshire Leisure Centre Floor Screed

Brief

Our client, Cooper & Williams, is a family-run business that provides roofing and flooring services. They subcontracted us to carry out the floor preparation and liquid floor screed for a large leisure centre refurbishment in Shropshire. Our liquid screed team in Shropshire were tasked to carry this impressive project out.

Key Considerations

This was an incredibly large 840m² area, perhaps the biggest single area we’ve had to cover with anhydrite screed. It had to be done in a single pouring session to prevent cracking, and without any air bubbles left inside.

The current flooring also suffered from rising damp issues, which could have contributed towards the deterioration of the previous floor covering. Because of the large open-plan space, we needed to ensure that damp membranes were joined together with a gapless seal.

What We Achieved

We supplied and installed a series of 1200 gauge damp proof membranes across the space, firmly sealed together with watertight adhesive. Working diligently, we set the seal on the subfloor to prevent the new floor from experiencing damp issues again.

We supplied several trucks filled with anhydrite screed, a quick drying screed that would allow Cooper & Williams to finish their project on schedule. Our entire liquid screed Shropshire team worked across the day to pour the screed evenly, and tamp it to remove air bubbles, before leaving to let it cure.

After a few days of drying, we returned to finish the floor preparation by sanding down the laitance, a flaky substance that forms when quick drying anhydrite screeds cure. Doing this would allow Cooper & Williams to lay a floor covering that properly bonds with the floor.

Our client was later able to lay the new heavy-duty floor covering without any complications, and the leisure centre was eventually re-opened for the public to enjoy.
