What Underfloor Heating for Laminate Flooring?

Both water and electric based underfloor heating systems can be safely used with laminate flooring. There is no distinct difference between the two when it comes to the type of flooring placed over it. To ensure your laminate floor lasts longer, your heating system should not be set higher than 27°C.

Is Laminate Flooring Good for Underfloor Heating?

We receive many questions regarding the best type of flooring to be used with heating, such as carpet and hardwood flooring. Overall laminate is a popular choice to pair with a heating system because it is harder to wear and longer lasting than solid wood and engineered wood. This is because of a protective layer that is resistant to scratches and other wear.

However, it is not indestructible and needs to be treated with respect if you want it to last long. As flooring warms up, it expands, if it becomes too hot then it may warp and buckle. That is why your maximum heating temperature should not exceed 27°C. Normally, a UFH setup operates in the range of 16-27°C, you would rarely need to raise the temperature above this.

One thing to be aware of when choosing suitable flooring to cover your UFH is the thickness of the boards. 18mm is the recommended maximum thickness you should have for laminate floorboards placed over your heating system. This is because thicker boards will reduce how quickly the heat transfers from the circuit to the room, reducing efficiency.

Which is Better for Underfloor Heating, Engineered or Laminate Flooring?

Both laminate and engineered flooring can be used with underfloor heating and neither is distinctly superior than the other in regards to that. If you are still unsure, you should consult with a flooring professional to see which is better for your home and needs overall.
