Save Energy This Winter: Optimise Your Home
In our last energy-saving heating blog, we discussed ways to reduce your heating bill by configuring your heating for the best performance. But even the most efficient way to heat the house cannot save money if your home loses heat too quickly.
Whether you have EasyFlow’s underfloor heating, electric, or radiator-based heating, these tips can help you save energy before Winter fully sets in.
Lay Loft & Floor Insulation
You can lose quite a lot of heat through your floor as this is in constant contact with the cold exterior. The same for your ceilings, as heat naturally rises and will leave through the cold roof. You need insulation to slow down heat transfer and achieve more energy-saving heating.
If you have underfloor heating, floor insulation may already be covered, but insulation on upper floors and loft insulation might have been missed out. Stone wool insulation typically costs £10 per m² and you can lay it down yourself like a blanket, so professionals aren’t necessarily required.
Don’t lay floor insulation over the top of an existing electric or water-based underfloor heating system, you’ll be slowing down the transfer of heat into the room and keep the heating on for longer.
Seal Cracks and Prevent Draughts
Cold air entering the home will reduce the effectiveness of your heating, that’s why you need to be on the lookout for draught sources and cover them up. Caulk and weather stripping over cracks will be effective at reducing cold air.
For external doors, installing a thick curtain over it or placing draught excluders at the base can help reduce the amount of cold air entering the home. Don’t block or seal any vents or air bricks, as these will have been installed to prevent damp and mould buildup.
Insulate Hot Water Pipes
As hot water travels through pipes, it loses heat into the surrounding air before reaching its destination. Insulating these and slowing the rate of heat transfer in non-essential areas will help save money in the long term. Pipe insulation is available to fit most pipes and can be easily installed without a professional.
This tip isn’t exclusive to homes with radiators. An underfloor heating installation will not have all pipes contained within the floor screed. The pipes that travel from the heat source to the manifold may be exposed.
Save Energy in the Future
For over a decade, EasyFlow has designed and installed underfloor heating, one of the most efficient way to heat homes in the UK. If your heating needs an upgrade, we will help you every step of the way. We have designed several configurations compatible with most houses, from low-profile heating contained in floor insulation to thick and evenly heated floor screed setups.
