Choosing the Right Underfloor Heating Solution for Residential Development
In residential housing development, the most efficient way to heat houses continues to be underfloor heating installations. Highly desired by buyers, and highly compatible with renewable energy and heat pumps – it’s not hard to see why so many construction companies are moving away from radiators.
There are two types of underfloor heating installations: wet or electric floor heating, both with their advantages and disadvantages in certain building environments. While electric is cheaper to install and wet is cheaper to run, these are not the only factors you need to consider.
Electric Floor Heating
It is relatively straightforward and inexpensive to install, and does not require floor screed, only a levelling compound to stabilise the floor covering. This can reduce construction time, as you will not need to wait long for the compound to cure.
Bear in mind that electric floor heating is more expensive to run, compared to wet underfloor heating with either a boiler or heat pump as the heat source. This may present as a negative for prospective buyers intending to reside in the properties. That said, renewable energy sources like solar panels can offset the running costs, making electric heating appealing as a low-carbon heating solution.
Best For:
This underfloor heating installation works best in small and complex developments such as flats. It can also be considered for projects with very tight turnarounds or budgets.
Wet Underfloor Heating
While more complex and expensive to install, wet underfloor heating has a much longer lifespan, lower running costs, and better efficiency than electric floor heating. This makes houses with water-based heating appealing to prospective buyers.
It is also compatible with heat pumps, more so than traditional radiator systems. This makes water-based underfloor heating compatible with renewables and low-carbon construction projects.
This underfloor heating installation can be adapted to multiple configurations, such as low-profile for limited build heights and tight deadlines or thick floor screed for a robust subfloor with even temperature distribution.
Best For:
Water-based underfloor heating works best with larger or high-end properties, and properties where a heat pump will be used as the heat source.
