How does Underfloor Heating work?

Take a look at our EasyFlow Ltd process

Our underfloor heating is made up of a series of 12mm or 16mm pipes laid onto insulation and encased in a liquid screed or installed within a low-profile system. The pipework is installed at pre-determined spacing, usually with a 100mm to 200mm gap between pipes, this is dependent in part on heat loss calculations carried out by the designer of the system. These pipes all run back to an underfloor heating manifold which is the central distribution point used to regulate the water temperature from the heat source i.e. combi boiler, air-source heat pump, biomass boiler etc. As underfloor heating systems require a much lower water temperature, the manifold must mix water from the boiler with cooler water before it is recycled and pushed out into the pipes.

Underfloor heating zones usually correspond to different rooms and can be controlled independently using separate thermostats. Zones can be made up of a number of loops, this is to avoid the pipe runs being over 100 metres in length. Anything over this can result in cold spots as the water within the pipe cools down on its return to the manifold.

The temperature is set on a thermostatic head connected to the mixing unit. Temperature gauges show the actual water temperature on both the supply and return valves.

The wiring centre is the central brain of the underfloor heating system, it is installed next to the manifold and connects the boiler or heat pump, thermostats, and actuators.

Thermostats are used to regulate the air temperature per room and can be controlled via the unit itself or easy phone or iPad controls.

Each thermostat learns the heating characteristics of the room and adjusts itself over a 14-day period. Radiators can also be controlled room by room using the same thermostats and a distribution manifold.
