How long does it take to install underfloor heating?

Generally, a typical installation will take 2-3 days. This depends on how many rooms need heating, the thickness and type of screed, and how many workers are on hand to install it. The project time can increase exponentially if you have to factor in waiting for a layer of screed to dry before proceeding to the next stage.

For example, if you are using wet screed, it can take up to 48 hours to dry before you can walk on it. To start the next phase of construction, the screed will need additional days to dry completely. Dry screed panels eliminate the need to wait for drying, often only needing 24 hours to rest before you can proceed to the next phase of your project.

When is Underfloor Heating Best Installed

The best time to install underfloor heating is when the building is weathertight. When constructing a new build or extension, this would be after the external walls and roof are put in place, and before the flooring is put on top. The earlier you factor UFH into your plans, the easier and more cost-effective it will be to integrate it.

The best time to replace an existing heating system depends on your current setup. Radiators can last many years, however, they start becoming inefficient after 10 years. If your heating system is poorly designed from the beginning, the best time to install new heating is as soon as possible in order to save on energy costs.

If you are doing a full refurbishment home improvement project, consider including underfloor heating. It is much more cost and time-effective to install when the flooring is completely unfurnished and exposed.
